Communication and compassion: Two essentials of palliative care
Patients and their family/whanau who are facing the end of their life face many challenges and stressors. There are often multiple health professionals or agencies involved in the palliative trajectory which can be confusing and exhausting for this vulnerable population.
Among others, two key elements that have been identified as essential by patients and their family/whanau are communication and compassion. Effective communication with patients , as well as within the multi-disciplinary team ensures a collaborative and integrated health pathway for palliative patients, while compassion is associated with caring, shared understanding and a way of alleviating both emotional and physical distress.
This presentation will highlight ways in which health professionals of any discipline can and do communicate compassionately and effectively with the palliative patients they care for .
Presenter: Jo Hendrickson, Nurse Practitioner Intern, Hospice Marlborough
